Composition for John Aslanidis' painting Sonic Network No.11
(Designed for headphone playback)
The long tone frequencies are obtained from the colours present, whilst the composition reflects the painting itself.
On permanent installation in the new Hamer Hall of the Victorian arts Centre, Melbourne Australia.
"Throughout his career Aslanidis has worked with various musicians to create scores and musical pieces that complement his works on canvas. Recently he has worked with British-born, Berlin-based sound artist Brian May to create sound/painting installations. As evidence of this ongoing collaborative partnership, May has recently created an evocative piece of electronic music for ‘Sonic Network no.11’.
In this collaboration, May takes into consideration the structure and composition of the painting, emulating the moiré (wave-like) patterns, which are demonstrated via audio interference of the sine waves (known as beat frequencies) in the sound piece. The sine wave tones created are thus audio representations of the circular forms, geometric shapes and reverberating patterns in ‘Sonic Network no.11’."
