this is starting to sound like Moby
- Son of Akira on October 26, 2009 08:33
@Zygadenus: LOL good or bad thing?
-
@Son of Akira: early Moby is a good thing.
- Son of Akira on November 06, 2009 03:50
@Zygadenus: Ha, good ear. Early moby was one of my biggest influences, everything before Play (not to say Play wasn't solid or anything, lol) Plus this track is about 10 years old now so the spirit was fresher then

@Dr.Nojoke: thanx doc, i remember you enjoyed the earlier draft as well from a while back, hopefully this is an improvement... duh, though I just noticed I didn't put the explanation/description on any of these new uploads, this whole mix still sounds a bit muddy to me; still a work in progress

Great moment right here, did you write all of this yourself it's breathtaking!
- Son of Akira on July 30, 2008 03:05
@Nathan Rain: Ya, everything note for note, save for one thing that's barely audible. One of the gongs (there are 3 total) was a field recording of a gong in a public square, and there's some talking and other crowd noise. It's barely audible at the quietest parts, and is actually one of the things I think needs fixing; either making it louder or cutting out the excess noise entirely. Maybe it's just in my head cuz I KNOW it's there, but it seems not add anything but excess noise and mud...

I love this koto-type sound paired with the the acoustic guitar-type sound.
- Son of Akira on July 29, 2008 09:11
@Candle Nine: It's called a luan, which is basically a chinese guitar. They're both similarly descended from the lute.
- Son of Akira on July 29, 2008 09:15
This was the part that i'm having issues with, though i'm suspecting it's probably a compositional/arrangment thing. It seems too muddy, but i'm also probably experiencing 'loop of death'.

I think that main drum sound could use some more dynamics. It gets boring right away and seems to lack life.
- Son of Akira on August 06, 2008 23:24
@jakobcreutzfeldt: Well I was never going for any prominent percussion, more just a heartbeat style drum pulse. If that's the case I should probably just drop the levels on them, right? (it definitely is more of a thump than a pulse now)
- jakobcreutzfeldt on August 06, 2008 23:51
@Son of Akira: No, sorry, I mean that each hit seems to be done with the same velocity...it sounds very robotic and careless, unlike the rest of the track. I think if you made it sound a bit more lifelike, with different velocities for each hit, it might feel a bit more fluid and natural. Not sure if that made sense...
- Son of Akira on August 07, 2008 02:11
@jakobcreutzfeldt: We're pretty much saying the same thing, and thanx for pointing this out. I meant that originally I DID just lay out the hits in a robotic fashion, but they were meant to be on the quiet side and it wouldn't be noticed, then I made them louder without really changing anything else. Thanx again, I have a laundry list with this one, like I said it's only about halfway finished.

Is that an electric guitar? I didn't see that coming...
- Son of Akira on July 31, 2008 20:07
@NapalmBob: It's a pipa put through an overdrive plugin, it's the instrument panned to the left that starts around the 1:00 mark, same pattern.

Actually I haven't heard anything yet that wouldn't get massive playcounts on said iPod, there are some real gems here... Will we hear a finished version of this?? The gong at the start that you say might not be adding much might add alot if it were more sparse? It is a very nice sound (even more so knowing it was sampled in a town square ;) ) but maybe occurs too often?
- Son of Akira on October 15, 2008 03:45
@Romart: Thank you kindly for the words of support; I hope to have a finsihed version soon, or at least a draft with the '2nd part', this might turn into a collab with my friend lazy_driftah (check him out, sick stuff). There are 3 different gong sounds in this, maybe gong overload? Not sure specifically, but your idea is definitely worth trying and I believe I came up with an idea just while typing this, although it's a small part of the track it was bugging me; so thanx!

like this beat more, more funk! if the cuts would be harder or to say it better if there would be some silence bits innit it would so damn remind me of some stuff prefuse 73 made. and thats alway good I think
-
@catsleeph: if you know "one word extinguisher" by prefuse 73. it would fit into that album nicely
- Son of Akira on August 10, 2008 01:55
@catsleeph: 'Too busy' might be another way of putting it. Basically this is every instrument and sound playing at once for this loop, if it were made into a track there might be only a short part where everything was playing, or maybe not at all. Like I said in the explanation these two loops are open to anybody to do anything with, i'll even send the individual parts, though I think I was just inspired to take this second loop and extend it into a full track. (thanx to you I should add!)

Wat the title says, two loops I created. I don't have any plans to make them into full songs, so if anybody wants to remix them or rap and sing over them or wipe their digital ass with them, feel free. Holla if you want any of the individual elements.
awesome textures.
