This is from my just-released live album 'Believe in Peace' - http://music.stevelawson.net/releases - the title, and the track titles, come from the work of an artist in Minneapolis called Geoff Bush. Geoff is a mix media artist, whose work is deeply influenced by the I Ching, and has a particular emphasis on the quest for peace.
Last summer, Lobelia and I were invited, via Geoff's son Jason, to play a house concert-style show in the studio, during an 'open studio' weekend in Minneapolis.
Within minutes of walking in, I knew I wanted to be able to respond musically to the work surrounding us, and so we split out set in two, the first half being all improvised solo pieces from me, which the majority of the audience were still wandering around looking at the art (we encouraged them to do so, allowing the music and the art to possibly inform one another). You can see some of Geoff's art at http://ichingarts.com
The recordings were initially tainted by a lot of electrical noise, thanks to a Tornado touching down a mile away from where we were, and everything in that part of the city going haywire... Fortunately, the wonders of modern studio gizmoetry being what it is, the noise was removed with zero damage to the rest of the recording! yay!
So here's track one. Each of the tracks are named after the four faces on the sculpture of Geoff's pictured here, titled 'I Ching' - he's taken four of the Hexagrams. The first of which is 'The Creative (Ch'ien)'.
I'm donating a third of all the money I make on the album to Rerieve. More about Reprieve here - http://reprieve.org.uk/
