Back in January I did two shows in San Francisco with a musician I'd not met until the evening of the first gig. I was connected with Daniel via mutual internet-friends (who I'd also not met, but trusted!) and we lined up a couple of shows. The idea being that we'd both play solo, then do a little bit of improv at the end.
At the soundcheck to the first show, something magical emerged, by accident - we were just checking levels, and some lovely music appeared. We looked at each other and said 'we're not going to play much solo stuff tonight, are we? :)
An hour later we played the show to a lovely attentive select audience, and this track was the first thing we played together. About the first 45 seconds of it is missing, thanks to me forgetting to hit record, but the rest of it is as we played it. It’s a pretty mellow start place for our duo, and across the two nights we have more than enough for an album that’ll be out later in the year…
What's amazing about this for me as an improvisor is how Daniel makes the bass loop in the middle sound in time when it's all over the place :) By ignoring the 'one' and using the snare on beat 3 as his anchor, he's constantly adjusting to my v. stretchy loop. Brilliant.
Enjoy - please ‘favourite’, comment and share it around if you like it! Daniel’s beautiful album can be found at http://colfax.bandcamp.com/ - go buy it!

@colfaxsound: It'll be on the 'everything we've ever done' USB stick, with the rest of the gig. I'm really looking forward to revisiting this show to master it! :)

@solobasssteve yes, Daniel is one of the most present 'in the moment' people I've ever known, musically and otherwise :)

@AtmosTrio I had the same comment myself when I saw them play - couldn't tell half the time who was playing what. and I've been playing with and listening to Daniel for fifteen years. AND I was watching. it was quite a surprisingly lovely mind-meld experience.

Playing with you is so much better than playing with myself. Wait a minute...that came out wrong. I can't wait to release this! :)

@Douglas Baldwin: thank you! Really glad you're enjoying it. Playing with Daniel was such a treat - the sense that he was 100% committed to making the best music we could in the moment was v. strong. I think it comes across :)

I love that though I'm familiar with both of your playing, K can rarely distinguish who is playing what.
