May we buy you a drink?

Better yet, Social Cues will give you a soundtrack. The genesis of this LA duo lies in those late night hours after the club, when many a DJ is known to geek out in endless conversation about music. Comprised of Ed Duffy and Alex Khadiwala, Social Cues began as a project for two friends and experienced DJs to raid each other's record collections. Now, with a foundation of house music and elements of disco, funk, and techno, this pair works over a deck to concoct a melodic, human set of tunes, related by genre but not defined by it.

Hardly new to dance music, both Ed and Alex had some formative moments with 90s electronica. For Ed, it was coming across Underworld's "Dubnobasswithmyheadman," while still a kid in small-town Minnesota. Alex, meanwhile, discovered Portishead's "Sour Times" on a late night music video program on public television in Denver and became entranced.

These tunes and early experiences are merely jumping off points for what has become a passion (and at times an obsession) for each half of Social Cues. According to Alex, Ed is a veritable database of trivia points that support his passion. Ed says that Alex's urge to share his musical discoveries and pure enthusiasm reminds him of why he started DJing in the first place.

Of course, loving music and knowing about it aren't enough... Social Cues is always conscious of being mood and scene appropriate with a tad of sophistication. Oh, and they're impossibly polite.

Now, how about that drink?
