New song by Australian combo featuring members of Eddy Current Suppression Ring, The Twerps and Dick Diver.

Jack Rabid from the Big Takeover ( ):

Boomgates is led by Brendan Huntley (AKA Brendan Suppression) of Melbourne’s enormously popular (down under) vets Eddy Current Suppression Ring, known here via touring and albums on Goner. These two mid-tempo tunes are as prickly post-punk indie rock as the three Eddy albums, if less immediately crazed. The common Stooges/second Radio Birdman LP/Boys Next Door strain which has burned through 35 years of Aussie rock is interestingly strained into a more simmering power on this project, though Huntley’s phrasing sounds like Iggy Pop or Celibate Rifles’ Damien Lovelock, singing a discordant duet with female foil Steph Hughes over a cycling, repetitive, atonal indie rock guitar groove. The flipside “Nothing” is even better, a Troggs-cavestomp rhythm married to a sinister guitar line that squeezes out sparks, as Hughes and Huntley coo and hiss again. Memorable material for sure! (
