//1 What does your new alias 'Bakermat' stand for? 

Bakermat is a Dutch word that stands for a kind of fundament of something big. I guess the English word ‘roots‘ is closest to its meaning. For example, Detroit is considered as ‘bakermat‘ for techno music.

What made you become DJ/ producer?

I have always loved music; since my birth I have always been busy with it. I grew up listening to a lot of classical music, but also a lot of soul and rock music. I fancy numerous genres but at the age of 12 I started to develop a huge love for house music. I began to create my own tracks with FL Studio (a great program that I still use for most of my tracks today) and shared it with friends. I believe the main reason why I started producing and djing is because I simply had the urge to do so. This must be the main reason for every musician to start making music. I meet a lot of guys that want to get famous; but if that’s your main reason, you’ll never make it.


//3 What are the main drivers of your quick success: the students of Utrecht, the rise of Tech House in the Netherlands or perhaps the power of social media?

The main driver is definitely the power of social media! It’s incredible how anyone can showcase their music to everyone without any trouble in these days. The only thing you have to worry about is: make good music! If that’s the case then everything will just go automatically. If people find a track on YouTube they will send it to their friends and these will share it across their network and that’s how you gain views as an unknown producer. It’s actually pretty fascinating how the internet works.

I’m 20 years old.

Where are you from?

I currently live in Utrecht, The Netherlands, but I was born in a very small town in the east of The Netherlands. It was when I moved to Utrecht when I was really inspired to create tracks like ‘zomer‘.


//6 What do you do besides DJing and producing?

I study in Utrecht! If everything goes well, I will have a degree in Psychology in 2014. I also play hockey and go out with friends. But at this stage in my life I’m very busy studying, producing and djing! 




//7 What/ Who are your main influences and inspiration?

I used to listen to James Brown a lot when I was young. Therefore, I’m sure that he still has a great influence on my music. Additional artists who I really admire are guys like Coleman Hawkins, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Harry Muskee and Apollo Brown. But there are also a lot of ladies who inspire me like: Adele, Ledisi and Lianne La Havas. I guess you can say that jazz, blues and soul are my main inspirations. I think the fact that I was raised with classical music also has a major influence.




//8 How would you describe your musical/ lyrical style?

Well, happy! I believe, this is the best word to describe my music. Although I very much enjoy listening to sad, more melancholic music too, I somehow always end up making happy tracks. I think it’s because my current phase in life doesn‘t give any reason to create sad, serious music. Also: I love to party and what’s better for parties than happy music that will cheer you up!

What can we expect from you in the months ahead?

I’m currently working on a lot of fresh tracks and remixes. Eventually, they will all be released. At the moment, I also try a lot of different styles, such as a little more tech- and a little more house-based tracks! And I also have several records on hold for next summer, because they better suit that season. As I said: happy!
A month ago, I signed an agency contract with Soulmax Entertainment. Therefore, I have a lot of gigs planned in Holland, France, Switzerland and Germany where I hope to meet my fans.




//10 What do you connect with SIMON&ME?

Awesome clothes! Really nice and original wear right here. I also like the whole style of the company too: very basic and minimalistic. It fits perfectly with my music; that’s why I decided to record a mix for them. 




//11 What is your favourite German food?

Doubtlessly ‘Reibekuchen‘ (I don’t know if the spelling is alright here). I love it! I know a small place close to the border where I definitely enjoyed my most delicious Reibekuchen ever. And I still go there a lot. I also fancy a ‘Strammer Max‘ and ‘Leberkäse‘ - German food is great. But, Itallian food will always be my number one.
