//1 What is the story behind 'A Professional Dreamer'?
People call me a ‘Dreamer‘ for a long time now. And often it's not even meant in a positive way. For me, it isn't easy to explain why. It's mainly because of the way I think about life itself, and how it should be like... I think.
The picture I am using for my Soundcloud-Account, which was taken when I was around 10 years old, seems to show a very typical bearing of me. I studied Media Production, and people kept telling me that even nowadays I very often look exactly like that - when I am thinking about ideas for short movies, when brainstorming on projects, or when I am just drifting off in thoughts. Which happens quite often.
It just seems like I spent an unbelievable huge part of my lifetime on trying to master the 'Profession of Dreaming'.
Even when being awake. For me, music has always been a tool for mind-travelling. Especially, but not entirely, melodic Electronic Music. So playing such kind of music, while using an Alias connected to what seems to be the thing I am best at, just seemed to be most authentic for me. It's... just who I am. Or who we are.
//2 The project 'A Professional Dreamer' consists of more than one person, right? How many are you and when did you start DJing together?
That's right, there is another person participating. But as the other person being involved into the project is my little brother, who at the same time is my true soulmate and the person I spent most time of my life with, you could still say that it's at least only one mindset behind 'A Professional Dreamer' or 'Professional Dreaming', even if it's split into two bodies.
We started listening to Electronic Dance Music almost 15 years ago. Mixing music ourselves was a dream back then already. It took until last year to finally make it come true. After facing the end of a long time relationship and canceling my plans to move to Asia, I felt that it was the right moment to start. It felt like "now or never" to me and I had this feeling that music would be what helps me best with getting over hard times. When I told my brother about the plans of getting equipment, he instantly started gathering tracks. Even if he started mixing a little later than I did, he was involved from the first minute. We also share an apartment at the moment, which is just awesome. Things like mixing together, discussing new tracks or ideas, or just listening to music together are possible at any time. There is always someone around who is just as crazy about music as you are yourself.
So right now it's the two of us. But when thinking, or lets say dreaming about things that could happen in the future... I guess, what we would like the most would be that 'A Professional Dreamer' is more about the Mindset or the 'Hear&Feel' and not about a specific person. We could imagine being a bunch of different artists sharing the same idea. That people wouldn't know exactly who is playing when coming to an event where 'A Professional Dreamer' plays. All they would know is what to expect considering the Style of Music. The Atmosphere... The People... that all would be about the Music and spending good time together.
See, that's what I mean with drifting off in thought. Dreaming at it's best.
//3 How old are you?
My brother is 27, I am 29.
//4 Where are you from?
We grew up in Darmstadt near Frankfurt. Right now, we live in Offenbach. Both of us were born in Germany, our Mother is South Korean though.
Kimchi flavoured Sauerkraut, so to say.
//5 What/ Who are your influences and what inspires you?
Whoah... That's difficult.
Although electronic music is our main focus, it's by far not the only genre of music we are listening to. So let's skip Namedropping here.
What influences and inspires us at the same time, especially since mixing music ourselves, is Soundcloud and it's great community. Young, unknown artists creating stunning tracks, edits and sets to give them away for free. Music lovers from all over the world, leaving comments and letting you know that they like your work. Well established artists sharing promos, free downloads, previews of new tracks or recordings of sets and providing help and information on the fly... moderated groups of websites and blogs, providing great support for unknown artists. It's pure awesomeness.
Besides that, it's the development of electronic music during the last years itself. DJs performing with Philharmonic Orchestras or former DJs performing with Live Bands... 16 year old artists creating unbelievable stuff on their notebooks... pushing music into new directions. And the fact, that everything is so... accessible. Mixing music meant a huge commitment a few years back. Nowadays, everyone is able to... create. And to share. And to instantly get back something. And we aren't talking about ‘fame‘ or reputation. It's about motivation to keep on trying. Of course, today a lot more crappy stuff is made and shared. But at the same time, way more beautiful things are created and you have a chance to get access to them.
//7 How would you describe your musical/ lyrical style?
As we started 100% virtually, there were no limits regarding the genre or style. No one asked or told us to head for a certain direction. We try to create conceptual work. To follow a certain topic or theme while creating sets. To... tell stories, or to set things in a way that listeners are able to create their own. There is a very nice quote from 'A Guy called Gerald': "I refuse to compromise or follow trends when it comes to my sound. My music is purely for entertainment". We couldn't say it better. There is only one rule for us: Keep it 'dreamy', somehow.
//8 What can we expect from you in the months ahead?
We just started 'Traumstunde', which is meant to be something like our own inofficial podcast series. We want to dig deeper into genres we don't know that well so far.
It all seems like playing for a real audience regularly, now is a realistic opportunity. Until now, things were happening mainly online. Or in a more or less private surrounding. On top of that, we are trying hard to achieve the necessary skills for producing tracks or edits of our own. Although both of us played the piano for a while, it's quite a challenge, especially regarding the technical knowledge which is needed to produce things properly. One Day...
//9 What do you connect with SIMON&ME?
Lifestyle, at first! Both my brother and myself were into skateboarding and snowboarding for a long time. Even if we aren't really practicing it anymore, the whole field of sports is still very fascinating to us. For us, it's not about a certain kind of boarding or skiing or biking at all, it's about the way of living. Creating spaces apart from the mainstream. Creating own identities in times of globalisation and equity. About setting own rules and pushing limits constantly. In sports directly, but also in everyday life and the way of living itself, including fashion and art. We are very proud and thankful for having the chance to contribute a little, tiny part to the world of SIMON&ME.
//10 What's your favourite day of the week?
Sun Day. No doubt about that. Thanks so much!
