"The enigmatic performer known as ShyBoy casts a fresh, intelligent spell over the indie pop landscape with his compelling debut, Water On Mars. ShyBoy's ethereal tenor and dramatic, hypnotic rhythms echo the best of Nick Drake, M83, Roxy Music, Sufjan Stevens and mid-period Moody Blues, while remaining entirely his own. Water On Mars' impressive cast of collaborators include Wendy Waldman, Allee Willis, David Batteau & producer Mark Nubar. Available on iTunes and Amazon."

ShyBoy’s richly produced debut album ‘Water on Mars’ - his first solo outing - was crafted with producer Nubar and co-written with a collection of both emerging and established Hollywood songwriters. One such collaboration resulted in the track “Carousel,” written with Allee Willis, creator of such hits as The Pet Shop Boys/Dusty Springfield gem “What Have I Done To Deserve This” and Earth, Wind & Fire’s classic “September.”
An impressive body of work, ‘Water on Mars’ is a concept album three years in the making and displays layers of ShyBoy’s sterling vocals against a cinematic background of analog and digital synths and an offering of string and wind instruments. The evocative lyrics express a longing for escape beyond the confines of the mundane.
From the starry-eyed, dreamlike wonder of the opener “Bird in Flight” and the film noir paranoia of “Marion Crane” (an ode to Alfred Hitchcock’s doomed heroine in the film Psycho) to the soulful rise and punctuation of the title track “Water on Mars” - the latter two songs both co-written with legendary singer-songwriter Wendy Waldman - the album elegantly engages the listener in what is ultimately an exciting coming of age adventure.
The week of the release, the HLN show ‘Raising America’ (with Kyra Phillips) picked up ‘Water on Mars’ album track "When I Close My Eyes" (written by ShyBoy, Nubar and Ivo Moring) as its theme song. Additionally, a cover version of the album track "Everytime I See the Moon" has been produced and recorded for the pilot episode of the new Bryan Fuller series in development, ‘High Moon’ (SyFy). ‘Water on Mars’ also features a reading of the 1984 Nik Kershaw hit song “Wouldn’t It Be Good.” A music video for the track, directed by Michael Bodie, is now available on VEVO.
ShyBoy performed a series of shows to launch the album, starting with a release party at A Plus D’s world-famous mashup club Bootie LA (at The Echoplex in Los Angeles where ShyBoy is a resident DJ and vocal mashup artist). From there, he and his band - Angela Momiyama (bass), Elizabeth Goodfellow (drums) and Nubar (keyboards) - headed to New York City to perform several shows at the 2013 CBGB Festival and then returned to LA for a special release show at The Hotel Café, where he will be performing a weekly residency every Friday in January 2014.
An ASCAP-recommended artist and winner of the Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Male Vocalist, ShyBoy is a multi-faceted recording artist, songwriter, producer and mashup DJ. His songs have appeared in numerous television shows, films, trailers and video games, including the end title for the multiplatinum ‘Devil May Cry 4.’ He recently completed work on music featured in the forthcoming season of the Logo series ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’ As the frontman for the alternative rock band Hypnogaja, he toured the US and Canada and garnered a following of 1 million followers on Twitter.
SHYBOY - THE HUFFINGTON POST
“If Nick Drake, Alan Parsons Project and M83 spawned a child raised on a healthy diet of Prince, Alfred Hitchcock, and classic science fiction films, it would be something resembling Shyboy. The enigmatic recording artist, whose Water On Mars, makes a bold, tuneful impression on today's indie-pop landscape, and one of the year's smartest, not-to-be-missed debuts.”
ASCAP RECOMMENDS SHYBOY: THE PLAYBACK RADAR REPORT
“Known for his clever mashups, a DJ residency at Bootie LA and notable TV/film soundscapes, Jason Arnold, commonly known as ShyBoy, and co-writer Mark Nubar sat down with Playback to discuss the vision behind the highly anticipated solo debut ‘Water on Mars,’ his obsession with space travel and how Psycho, among other films, inspired his craft.”
SHYBOY - MONTEREY COUNTY WEEKLY
“When Jason Arnold, aka ShyBoy, is performing his music, his alias doesn’t really seem fitting. On his brand new tune “Bird in Flight” – a cross-pollination of RJD2, DJ Shadow and 2001: A Space Odyssey – Arnold’s understated vocals quickly erupt into full-blown soulful crooning that’s irresistible for eardrums.”
