Mark Cullen (Pony Club), Simon Quigley (composer) & Colm Keegan (poet & current All-Ireland Spoken Word Slam champion) have collaborated as The Unruly Trinity on 'Ireland Is …' - a harmoniously discordant expression of where ‘Ireland is’ in these final months of 2010.
Track One | The Song
Invincible, with lyrics by Mark and music arranged by Simon, is about the belief of so many that the good times could last forever, and was inspired by Mark’s visit to Portsmouth where he saw the once glorious HMS Invincible rusting and useless in dry dock.
Track Two | The Instrumental Piece
Androids’ Lovesong, composed by Simon, was inspired partly by Pixar’s Wall-E, as Eve - shiny, powerful and progressive, and Wall-E - broken, battered but dependable, try to get together in a strange waltz, reflecting the struggle to marry our cultural heritage with an inability to deal with the practical.
Track Three | The Poem
Ireland Is … is Colm’s poem. With powerful spoken word and musical accompaniment composed by Simon, it rails against the mass of contradictions Ireland is, or we are. ‘It's got alloy wheels and tinted windows, it can tear you limb from limb or stop and offer you a lift’ because ‘we’re fumbling blind, we’ve no idea what we’re doing, no idea where we’re going and we’re almost there.’
