ith his 6 feet four inches and lean frame, at first glance, one may believe Shawn to be a basketball or volleyball player. While this may be partly true as Shawn is known among his peers to have some “game” on the court; it is his skills off the court, which has wowed audiences since his formative years. Many times Shawn can be found walking about with headphones glued to his ears, oblivious to his surroundings, while relishing in the beauty of the music. I like to say when the doctor slapped Shawn on his bottom to see if he was alive, he sang instead of cried.
While Shawn was born singing, it is his mother who drove him to become a singer. This is no surprise, as his mother can hold her own and his father- Adrian English, an accomplished guitarist/ vocalist, was once a member of the famous Ambassadors Gospel band. With such talent surrounding him, Shawn grew both as a person and a vocalist. Occasionally, he could be found singing at churches with his mother around the country. Although Shawn’s parents played a pivotal role in recognizing and developing his talent, Shawn better realized his potential as a vocalist during his tenure at West Ruimveldt Primary School. There, under the guidance of Sir Wilfred Success, he, along with singers such as Dallas Forte and Rene Chester honed their natural talent on the national stage.
Shawn entering the GT&T Jingle Competition in 2006 (The Biggest competition music event in Guyana) and this was to be the turning point in Shawn’s career. Not only did he win the competition, but it also opened many doors for Shawn English. Later that year, Shawn released his first single- Blinded, which received good reviews, especially in the rock fraternity. Other songs, such as Chains and The Name (with Rene Chester) were to follow in the subsequent year. To date Shawn English has been featured in numerous shows and events across Guyana where he has shared the stage with other Internationally recognized artiste such as Papa San, Dj Nicholas, Chevelle Franklin, Prodigal Son, Sherwin Gardner, Eddie Neblette, St Matthew Jason Mighty and many more. Shawn English’s style and passion for what he does is what has caused him to remain a household name in his Home land.
In 2009, Shawn had a vision to bring Morality back into Secondary schools through music. This vision led to the creation of what he calls the “Focus” project. He sees this project as a chance to give students a “third” choice to the Gaza and Gully phenomena; that being the GOD factor (TRINITY)! In that same year, he released the first song in this project Focus, which really encapsulates what the entire project, is about.
In October of 2011 Shawn English signed with Selah Muzik out of Georgia ( www.selahmuzik.com ) and has gone on to release his first single with Selah called “Go Hard”.
