Stripped down, garagey and desperately sincere, Sensual Harassment's "Russian Dolls" is post-punk time dynamite loaded with suffocating immediacy and nervous unrest.
With a breakneck rhythm paced by jagged guitars and a tortured vocal echoing haunted dreams, it sounds as if The Walkmen had listened to more of Echo & The Bunnymen and allowed themselves a little more late night experimentation with amphetamines.
Towards the end, the song switches gears on a dime, lulling you quietly into a Doors-like trance, setting the table for an ancient ceremony held in an opium den. Then quickly and without warning we are hit with a violent burst of buzzsaw guitars, thundering bass and ear-piercing cymbal cacophony, turning the entire endeavor into a ritual rock sacrifice.
