A human family with an unusually passionate and tragic story. The great god Wotan disguised himself as a mortal named “Wälse” and sired the Walsung twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde. Separated as children, they are reunited in “Die Walküre.” Their son, Siegfried, fulfills the tragic fate of the Wälsungs in “Siegfried” and “Götterdämmerung.”

Musical example from Act One of “Die Walküre,” orchestra of Seattle Opera conducted by Robert Spano. Photo by Chris Bennion.
