    Vira Slywotzky sings Magda Sorel in Seattle Opera’s upcoming production of Menotti’s “The Consul.” The American soprano, who made her mainstage debut as Ines in “Il trovatore” in 2010, was a Young Artist at Seattle Opera in 2008/09 and 2009/10; in March 2009 she sang Helena in the Young Artists production of Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” In this passage, she attempts to woo her beloved Demetrius:

    I am your spaniel; and, Demetrius,
    the more you beat me,
    I will fawn on you;
    use me but as your spaniel,
    spurn me, strike me,
    neglect me, lose me;
    only give me leave,
    unworthy as I am,
    to follow thee.

    Brian Garman conducted the orchestra of Seattle Opera’s Young Artists Program.
