Bass-baritone Matthew Scollin, a native of Walled Lake, Michigan, sang Sparafucile at the “Viva Verdi!” concert. Hired by Rigoletto to assassinate the Duke who has disgraced his daughter, Sparafucile is pressured by his sister Maddalena—who has fallen for the Duke herself—to kill someone else and substitute the body. Gilda, Rigoletto’s daughter, overhears their plan and offers herself as a sacrifice. Verdi’s orchestra churns up a storm worthy of “King Lear” at the moment when Gilda enters the assassin’s den.

Dana Pundt as Gilda, Deborah Nansteel as Maddalena, Matthew Scollin as Sparafucile; Brian Garman conducts the Seattle Opera Chorus and the Seattle Opera Young Artists Program Orchestra. Photo (Deborah Nansteel and Matthew Scollin) by Bill Mohn.
