Lucille Beer makes her Seattle Opera debut as Erda in Seattle Opera’s “Das Rheingold” and “Siegfried.” In this passage from Act Three of “Siegfried,” she is baffled to learn what Wotan has done to Brünnhilde: “I feel confused since I woke: the world is out of kilter. The Valkyrie, the Vala’s child atones in sleep—while her wise mother slept? Wotan taught the girl defiance and then punished her? Justice’s guardian, he who defends oaths, obstructs justice and breaks oaths? Let me go back, let sleep lock up my wisdom.” Asher Fisch conducts the orchestra of Seattle Opera.
