Dennis Petersen sings Mime in Seattle Opera’s “Das Rheingold” and “Siegfried.” Here the perplexed Nibelung, trying to drug Siegfried, loses control of his ‘inner monologue’ and says out loud what he ought to keep to himself:
MIME: Just drink it, trust me! Soon all will fade into night and mist. Helplessly you’ll lie there. With you in a trance, I’d easily take the treasure and hide. But if you ever woke up, I’d never be safe—even with the ring. So with that sword you made so sharp, I’ll chop off your head, and then have peace—and the ring.
SIEGFRIED: You'd do that to me?
MIME: Do what? Did I say that? I only want to cut off your head.
Stefan Vinke is Siegfried; Asher Fisch conducts the orchestra of Seattle Opera.
