South African soprano Elza van den Heever won $15,000 in Seattle Opera’s 2008 International Wagner Competition, singing Elisabeth’s “Dich, teure Halle” from TANNHÄUSER and Elsa’s “Einsam in trüben Tagen” from LOHENGRIN. In this passage Elsa, accused of doing away with her own brother through sorcery, instead of defending herself describes a dream she has had in which a shining knight in armor, drawn by a swan, appears miraculously to defend her. Asher Fisch conducts the orchestra of Seattle Opera.

Recent roles for van den Heever have included Elisabetta in the Met’s MARIA STUARDA, Elsa in Munich, Agathe in Vienna, Fiordiligi in Paris, and several roles in Bordeaux.
