Help us celebrate great moments in Seattle Opera history as we approach our golden anniversary. This week, we remember the final incarnation of Seattle Opera's first RING production in 1984--also the compromised Seattle Opera debut of bass-baritone Roger Roloff. With his beautifully lyrical singing Roloff performed Wotan in "Das Rheingold," but the next day Thomas Stewart flew to Seattle to sing the "Walküre" and "Siegfried" Wotans when Roloff was taken ill.
Roloff would go on to sing the Flying Dutchman, Hans Sachs, Jochanaan, and Wotan in 1985, '86, '87, and '91 at Seattle Opera.
This recording was made on the one evening he did sing in the 1984 RING. Wotan's heart swells with pride as he takes his first glimpse of Valhalla. Henry Holt conducts the orchestra of Seattle Opera.
