Great big construction workers. Fasolt and Fafner, two enormous brothers, raised high the ramparts of the glorious castle Valhalla, tempted by Wotan’s offer of the goddess Freia as their fee. (Fafner covets Freia’s golden apples of immortality, while Fasolt yearns to wed the enchanting goddess.) Both brothers come to terrible ends. Fasolt is murdered at the end of “Das Rheingold”—the first death caused by the curse on the ring—and Fafner, after spending many years as a despised and lonely dragon, is dispatched by a brave young hero in “Siegfried.”
The bass who sings Fasolt also sings the role of Hunding in “Die Walküre,” an uncouth human warrior from the Neiding clan.
