Sean Hughes..... A well known & much respected DJ, promoter of the award winning Disco Bomb parties and self taught producer with tracks already snapped up by Cr2 and Floorplay.
He holds a very coveted residency on the terrace for Cream at Amnesia in Ibiza (winner of the best global club award) as well as being a regular guest at Privilege, Space, Eden, Es Paradis, Ibiza Rocks and many more. This year’s highlight saw him close the main room at the huge Radio 1 event at Privilege. His style of bumpin, jackin, energetic house music is aimed straight at the floor and his technical skills of cutting, looping, scratching and always rocking the floor have been given the nod of approval from the world’s best Djs.
On the production front, Sean's been busy in the studio...a self taught producer who is currently put the finishing touches to his first 4 track E.P. ready for release in the new year. Four tracks of fresh forward thinking house and with releases already on Floorplay and Cr2, 2011 is set to be an exciting year for Sean’s production.
Aside from Ibiza, Sean is a much in demand DJ, with a residency for Living ventures all over the UK, he's part of the Floorplay family in Brighton and is currently the Cream alpine tour resident which sees him Dj under the most recognized brand in dance music across ski resorts all over Europe. Sean has also been very busy with recent guest slots all over the UK and abroad, including Mexico, Thailand, Poland, Switzerland, Dublin and Dubai.
So where did it all begin?..
Let’s go back to 1989 when Sean is introduced to house music, his elder brother gave him a cassette of a then up and coming DJ named Carl Cox. Sean was fixated with this new found music and the way it's mixed together, he tuned into all pirate radio stations to get as much exposure to new djs and styles of music as possible, he saves his paper round money and buys two record players from a car boot sale and teaches himself to mix and scratch like the pros!
After taking his 3 deck mixing and scratching wizardry to the clubs of Merseyside from 15, its wasn't until he went to work in Ibiza in 2001 that Sean Hughes really started to make a name for himself. Unfortunately Ibiza wasn't as easy to crack as he had expected: "It was like every lad I spoke to was a DJ and was armed with a demo for every bar or club I could see, promoters were more than tired of being nagged by wanna-be DJs and i was starting to lose hope". But after entering and winning a competition at Beach Bar 'Kiwi' (now The Orange Corner), where he won a residency Sean’s luck changed.
Sean has been going back to Ibiza every summer since. The residency at Kiwi got him the exposure and the contacts he needed to excel in Ibiza and by 2006 Sean was crowned 'Best DJ' and his party 'Disco Bomb' was awarded 'Best workers Party'. His residency at Cream followed soon after: "It really was a dream come true I remember blagging my way into to Cream in Liverpool with my fake ID when I was just 15 and stood amazed as Sasha was rocking the thousand people in front of him it was the first time I’d seen a real dj play live and I remember thinking 'wow how do you get up there?!' this summer I played alongside Sasha at Cream it was a pinch yourself moment!"
But it’s not just house music where Sean excels he was made Savannah’s day time resident 2005 and Living Ventures resident in the U.K mixing anything that set the mood from funk, disco, rock, soul, hip hop, chill out and even classical. It’s this dj’ing versatility that sees Sean as one of the few Dj’s that is often booked to play main room and back room sets.
So what does the future hold?
With a lot of time put aside for studio work with many collaborations and solo ventures planned 2011 is going to be huge for production. Sean will also be starting a new podcast and blog with new releases, mixes, bootlegs and re edits from himself and many other big name Dj’s and with future plans to make and album and start his own record label there’s a lot to look forward to.
