Veteran English stage and screen director Oliver Parker’s third film adaptation of an Oscar Wilde work is a darkly revisionist retelling of the famed poet/playwright’s only novel – “The Picture of Dorian Gray” – starring Ben Barnes as Gray and Oscar-winner Colin Firth as the charismatic and domineering Lord Henry Wotton.
Like his previous scores for Parker’s films – The Importance of Being Earnest, Othello, and An Ideal Husband – Charlie Mole’s work here walks an audacious line between classical and contemporary, fusing traditional orchestration with gothic rock instrumentation, in the process infusing Wilde’s classic fable with the vibrancy of a modern-day supernatural thriller. Electronic effects and electric guitar merge with a wide array of acoustic instruments in an eerie, haunting mélange of both passion and horror.
