About

Hello!

Here lie my assorted noodlings. They range from audio-based ambient meanderings to beat driven synth wig-outs. One day I'm hoping that something of a common theme will emerge, but until then we'll just have to see what happens...

Things I love: lush reverbs, distortion, maracas, polyrhythms, screaming 303 lines, water trickling, phasing effects, tape saturation, Korg Monotron, things that sound a bit like a human voice but not quite, claustrophic spaces.

Music that's currently tickling me: Keith Fullerton Whitman, Autechre, Sunn O))), Andy Stott, Tim Hecker, Chelsea Wolfe, Belbury Poly, Deaf Center, Bohren & Der Club of Gore, Steve Reich, Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto.

I also write a blog reviewing albums and gigs in the vein of the above, which can be found here:

@False Identity: Cheers Charlie, thanks for having a listen. The synth itself is pretty simple - Albino, 2 osc, 1 saw, 1 spectral05, balanced evenly, both going to a cream filter BP24 with a bit of res, monophonic and some held glide. Though when it comes to getting the melody to sound good I think it's all about the balance between notes that glide and ones that don't overlap and start with a fresh envelope - I can never get that right by writing it in midi so playing it in is key!

OK I like the whole track right, but this bit right here is pure acid shivers. Production comes with time, and yours is really getting there, but composition is at the heart of everything and I think if you to take the essence of this section and spread it over a whole track you'd end up with something utterly psychedelic

@Micade: Thanks, cheers for taking the time to listen! The sounds in this actually are not synthesized - it's sampled audio that has been slowed down, resampled, and reverbed to buggery!

@Joe Meland: hah yes too much time spent listening to weird electronica ;p - I think every now and again you can hear a little bit of glide or something of that ilk at the end of notes that gives them away. They're very well synthesized though!

There's some really nice ideas in this track - you're writing some striking melodies, and I reckon the Goa-esque thing is something you should expand on... I definitely reccomend taking the plunge and getting stuck in with the percussion though - it can be a massive pain in the arse to write but really very rewarding. It's often just about having the right samples - Thomas Penton Essential Drums is quite a good little pack...

This synth coming in really nice - very goa. As a personal preference I think this bit would benefit from staying put on same bass note - there's a quite subtle key change a little while ago which works well, but here I think it sounds slightly ravey, which is fine but perhaps a little at odds with the lush goa psychedelia...

@Tuonela: Yes I think that's the key with this sort of music where you're trying to create movement out quite similar, non-percussive sounds: turn the bloody volume down! I think I might set that as my desktop background: TURN THE BLOODY VOLUME DOWN!

This flourish is very nice, I'd be interested to hear how it works, compositionally speaking. Are you just playing the chord then zooming off up the scale? Or is it arpeggios?

There's a really nice reverb on the strings in this section, it's just right... I can't work the strings out, actually, they are synthesized, right? They sounds like they have a subtle noise component, an intriguing sound!

Yea for some reason everything seems to turn out bleak hehe - I'm planning on writing something much more synth-based, psychedelic, and, err, gentle at some point. Cheers for the comment!
