"All science (Wissenschaft) however is a function of the soul, in which all knowledge is rooted. The soul is the greatest of all cosmic miracles, it is the conditio sine qua non of the world as an object. It is exceedingly astonishing that the Western world (apart from very rare exceptions) seems to have so little appreciation of this being so. The flood of external objects of cognizance has made the subject of all cognizance withdraw to the background, often to apparent non-existence." - "What is Life" Erwin Schrödinger. 1944. See also "Mnemic Psychology" by Richard Semon
Dawkins: "What you fell and what I feel is irrelevant. What matters is what is evidence for." So at this point, you just need to ask him what motivated him to write his book. He will respond mentioning feelings. Then you ask him "On a scale of 1 - 10, how much do you love your wife/child/sibling?" That's how irrelevant feelings are.
@CASTOR: As far as my respect for Dawkins as a compassionate human being and a talented artist ...lol thats laughable.
@garet lee: I'm a big fan of Brand but being public about his struggles doesn't make him special. The world is sick because of atheists. The world is sick because of theists. Doesn't matter. People are people. There are good and bad everywhere. So the best thing we can do is to just be kind and be grateful for the brief but magnificent opportunity life provides.
@garet lee: There is a difference between religion and spirituality. In it's most basic form, atheism is based upon a profound respect for the universe and the natural world. So to say that people have forgotten about nature itself because of atheism and science, which in it's entirety is a study of the natural world, is wrong. There are MANY scientists who are religious, but they know where to draw the line. Just because someone is a practitioner of the arts or struggled in life and with addiction doesn't mean they have to be of faith. Dawkins is quite a successful writer. He is also an artist. I'm sure Dawkins also struggles/has struggled. Everybody does.
@garet lee: Well first of all, science isn't 'just another "religion"' because it is based upon facts and sound experimentation. Of course, if you have alternative views on facts, well, that would make no sense. Facts aren't subject to opinion. They just are. There are always different theories on a certain scientific matter that hasn't been proven yet. That's why there are scientific debates and experimentation. On that note, your comparison of a scientific theory to a story is, no disrespect but, ignorant of you. A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method and repeatedly tested and confirmed through observation and experimentation. The universe itself isn't made up of anything. The things in the universe however, is made up of different elements, which are then made up of individual particles and atoms of which "science", as you put it, in fact, has proven the existence of a long time ago.
@Hans Mittendorf: Agreed.
@Vanessa Le Page: wow very well said could not agree more.
@CASTOR: phenomenon :a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question.Brand is a artist and a thinker,maybe if Dawkins could play music or paint or had ever struggled in his life with addiction or went out his way to help someone he would have more faith.Then again in to be a scientist or a athiest requires much faith.We live in a world obsessed with technology so much so we have destroyed our planet,our fresh water our food and our youth.People are so depersonalized because of athiesm and science they have forgotten our true inner nature and forgotten about nature itslef.The world is so sick because of these people ....we need less Dawkind more Brand ..period.
@CASTOR: we have no proof for the existence of 96% of what science thinks the universe is made of – and yet the theories explaining it (we call them theories to avoid calling them stories) we hold to be true.There is proof yoga is good for your mind and body.Yoga is a spiritual practice by the way and was not developed using science alone.What poor Dawkins doesnt understand is its all necessary and its all apart of life.Ask yourself what life would be like without spirituality even Einstien was spiritual becasue there are things we feel that we can never explain and that pisses poor Dawkins off but the real genius understands this.Socrates-I am the wisest man in the world because i know one thing. That i know nothing.I cant trust Dawkins hes just a lost little kid.
@CASTOR: Science itself is just another "religion",spirituality and science are two different things altogether.Science is just as bad as religion if you try to have any alternative views people like Dawkinswont even consider your opinion and call you theist-scientist much like Religions will call you a heretic. Ordinary people get ridiculed, if they doubt Dawkins interpretations of his priesthood,you do know he has his own athiest church.The man speads misinformation for attention hes a sad caveman and Brand is trying to bring him into the light...maybe he should try some yoga lol.
@garet lee: What makes you say that?
@Vanessa Le Page: Exactly!
@CASTOR: Hes a clueless trogladtye.
@Will Holdcroft: agreed
A good scientist, I believe, is one who has a creative mind. One who can see possibilities and sets out to prove them, successfully or not. Many a scientist has been unsuccessful in his mission, only to have someone prove their notion years later, thanks to new technologies or what have you. In the intervening years, the original scientist's notions weren't ridiculous simply because he didn't have the evidence or proof. Though, often scientists do treat their fellow academics with undeserved scorn and ridicule because they have rigid and uncreative minds. Mr. Dawkins is not a creative thinker. He is limited by his own very narrow viewpoint., relying on dismissive terms like "super-natural" to discount anything beyond his realm of understanding.
@Hamoon Jamshidi: When does he ever win? Never heard him win....
what an embarissing interview, it's like listening to jahova witnesses bang on about stuff they havent bothered to research and then retorting with 'oh well I just feel that this belief I have been born in to is right because it just is in spite of all the evedence to the contrary and regardless of the ummense contradictions" :D
@garet lee: How so?
Russell you are far ahead of Richard
That's a bit of a big assumption!
Dawkins is a joke
Russell...listening to you is often like listening to my own thought life....heres a small contribution to help ease the stress and pressures of the deep spiritual quest from time to time....." chop wood and carry water"....in this place hides many of our answers....Love Tree in Canada...
Russell is wonderful entertainer, still shouting over pure rationality does 'nada'. Richard Dawkins is spot on, as usual. Salvation through rational thought - yes, please... wins over escapism, negative or positive. :)
Dawkins wins. like every single time he talks.
You'll outgrow the woo woo Russell and when you do you'll be even more compelling.
Russell, interview the ghost of Alan Watts!
@Treadaar: "what matters is what is evidence for"... i dont know this guy but he sounds like the typical scientist who doesnt believe in magic
