“…one of the most accomplished albums to invade my space in a long time. – 4.5/5″
– Jackie Hayden, Hot Press
"I was played this song a few times and loved it but when Simon the director told me he was Irish, I was gobsmacked. He deserves the world."
- Myles O' Reilly a.k.a. Arbutus Yarns on the When I Met The Devil video
“When I Met The Devil is without doubt one of the best offerings from any Irish artist in donkeys… the tunes are proper tunes, the production is second to none, his harmonies and choice of instruments are inspired…”
– Dime Zine
“I have to say Ross Breen blew me away… Just go and see him, you won’t be disappointed.”
– Roadhouse Magazine
“… rocking tunes, punching vocal lines and tons of hooks… – 9/10″
“… nothing short of a revelation. Despite being a supremely talented guitarist, it was actually his voice that left the lasting impression, a cross between the soaring wildness of Jeff or Tim Buckley and the world-weary bassiness of Tom Waits. He is definitely a name to watch for the future.”
– Sligo Weekender
“An album well worth buying and listening to, start to finish… Ross applies his voice with pure passion, singing every lyric in perfect melody… – 6/6″
– Musicreviewunsigned.ie (Artist of the month March 2011)
"... the quality of the resulting product is unmistakeable, Life Support sounding like a pop version of Warren Zevon while the title track When I Met the Devil is wonderful cross of folk and gospel."
- Leinster Leader
"Another band I managed to catch was Ross Breen, who played an excellent set just as the Sun went down on the Sun Stage."
- Goldenplec.ie (review of Knockanstockan '11)
“an interesting twist on the singer-songwriter theme… His songs leap across a span of styles… the voice is something to behold.”
– Iris Magazine
“These are songs you’ll be singing along to after first listen but still marvel at after each subsequent play… packed with sonic interest from the beautifully layered close harmonies, the intricate guitar work, to the driving rhythm, there is something there for all music lovers.”
Ross Breen released his self-produced debut album in 2011, leading quickly to a number of hugely positive reviews. When I Met The Devil immediately received a 4.5 star write-up in Hot Press, Ireland’s foremost music magazine, while Drop-d magazine were moved to label Breen “the Irish music scene’s best kept secret” upon hearing the record. The album is complimented by an accomplished video for the title track, directed by Simon O’ Neill.
A graduate of the Ballyfermot Rock School, the Kildare-born songwriter has consistently impressed on the live stage, earning countless invitations as a special guest with the likes of Glen Hansard, Bellx1, Sinead O’ Connor, Declan O’ Rourke, Damien Dempsey and Mundy. He has also built a following on the festival circuit, performing with his band at various large weekend events such as Vantastival, Knockanstockan (three years running) and the prestigious Hard Working Class Heroes.
Recently, Ross’ music has been included on a diverse range of compilation albums: Ceol 06 (an Irish language album including artists such as The Corrs and The Waterboys), Dublin Calling (a commemorative Rock School album featuring fellow alumni Damien Dempsey and Fiach) and Knockanstockan Vol. 1 (an album showcasing the best acts to play at the independent festival).
