Supplications (2008), for Clarinet Quintet, was my first substantial composition after taking a year off from academic studies. The combination was suggested by my familiarity with clarinet ensembles at Houghton College and a call for scores opportunity. The idea behind the piece was to progress through different historical musical styles, which proved to be a major challenge. In the end, the piece became a parody of different musical styles in order to keep coherence within the work. The form of the piece is additive, with a recurring 12-tone row used as a transitional and unifying device.
