About

Manx Canadian musician and writer.

I am part of a electronic folk duo called Sandfingers (see link above). I also play(ed) guitar and modular synth with The Chasms.

I use modulars by Bugbrand & Buchla, guitar, field recordings, lots of effects pedals and portable electronics sound generators and run them through Don Audio tube amps. I record with JLM preamps and Rode & Josephson microphones.

I listen to Flying Saucer Attack, Electrelane, Talk Talk, Nick Drake, MBV, Gillian Welch, Sonic Youth, Seefeel, Delia Derbyshire, Daphne Orames, Dylan, Traffic, Echo & The Bunnymen, Arne Nordheim, Tristam Cary.

great sound Dan, I was thinking it didn't have enough v/c (only one of the 3 lfo's, none on the EG) but this is nice. Definitely bring it over for the TT.

thanks Shiro, I'm enjoying working sometimes in a mellower vibe - this is a short edit to go at the beginning of the 2nd album, but a 10 minute version (likely with some other instruments and singing) will be at the end.

I've only recorded with a pair together so far, it's loud enough. I intend to set up an amp head & speaker in each of the 4 corners and do some quad recording but not sure how to mix it later. I'm also trying to develop a setup that will allow me to run several amps each with their self-evolving guitar loop, that would be recorded live, and then play the 4th amp live over the loops. I'd have to do them on at a time and then connect the guitar to the next amp. Just haven't had the time to get it going.

No website and last time I was his workshop he said he was going to stopping making amps. Too much difficulty getting the right transformers and their prices have gone through the roof in the past few years. I've got 4 amp heads (two 15 watt Buggane's and two 7 watt Baby Bugganes) and all are were customised (one has fender eq circuit, one with a tube compressor built-in, etc) and a modifed Selmar 100 watt that he's finishing. He also does some interesting pedals but mainly one-offs (I've been borrowing a dual pedal for while, weird fuzz followed by a modified orange squeezer compressor, after I kept asking for one and he just came me his prototype to keep me quiet).

I'm lucky to have a barn to record in with no one around for several acres. I can't get the sound I want without having the amps pushed nearly to 10.

I've recorded with the Megalith a few times and it really excels when playing with other musicians (and I probably play better / more inventively as well), the extra heavy gives gets things through. I tried it with a bugbrand box with contact mic and guitar strings and it made it a howling feedback banshee.

It's similar to the new amp I go from the guy who's build my other ones. Don Audio Buggane with dual drive, a one off favour to me. Negates the need for any fuzz / distortion pedals. But on other amps the Megalith is straight to early Glenn Branca with the press of a switch. not much inside though
