About

With so many earnest, guitar-toting young men now struggling desperately for attention, it’s rare to find a genuine artist – one driven not by the urge to simply impress people with their talent but instead by something even more primal - where making music is as an integral part of their existence as eating, breathing, or talking. Presented without subterfuge or pretext, the simplest of stories delivered frankly can touch profoundly. And so it is that Renny’s performances are characterised by their authenticity - an uncontrived, almost conversational interaction, set to music.

Renny Field’s journey to this point has involved three independent studio albums, all critically acclaimed. His first, ‘Make Believe’ (2003) was followed in 2005 by ’26 Reasons’ and in 2009, his first self-produced record, ‘The Arena’. His most comprehensive offering to date, ‘The Arena’ presents fourteen tracks ranging from heartfelt acoustic folk to rich cinematic pop, and features a selection of Australian artists with whom Field has collaborated over the past few years (including Kent Eastwood and Sam Buckingham). A collection of tales of love, life, loss, beauty, success and failure, ‘The Arena’ is bound together with a sense of hope and determination.

On the back of this latest album release, Field set off on a tour which saw him travel extensively throughout Australia before packing his bags and heading to Europe. It was a tour which lasted the best part of twelve months and took him to pubs, clubs, festivals and everything in between. From the bright lights of Sydney's Oxford Art factory, he went on to encounter lonely hotels in regional NSW, a candlelit basement in Aberdeen, street stages in Berlin, the cliched yet eerily familiar surrounds of the Aussie Bar in Helsinki and the world-renowned songwriter rooms of Dublin. Not to mention several headline shows at London's famous "Troubadour" club, a venue which has played host to the likes of Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix.

Having held court with audiences the world over, Field eventually came to rest in a cottage on the far south coast of Ireland, where he spent three months adjusting to rural life and working on material for his upcoming fourth solo record. Though his thirst for adventure knows no bounds, life on the road has it's ups and downs, all of which make for a compelling tale that Field is only too happy to share with the rest of us:

"My gigs aren't about presenting myself in a certain type of way, trying to play the right type of music, trying to be a particular type of artist. They're about making a connection with the people who are there to see me; helping them get to know me a bit better. The real me. I've got so many amazing stories from the road, and a lot of my songs have been born out of these experiences - both good and bad. My music is my life in that sense, and for better or worse that's what people can expect when they come to see me perform."

A modern day troubadour in every sense of the word, and a name to watch in 2011.

"The depth of craft in his writing and skill in his performance is extraordinary".
