After the success of their debut single, “Figo” b/w “Keep Running”, Darlington-based jazz and funk combo Weekend Sun return to Hero Records to release their hotly anticipated follow-up single “You’re Good To Me” b/w “Her Name Escapes Me”.

Weekend Sun’s core consists of dj and producer Chris Tarn and double bass player Phil Smith, both from Darlington in the sunny north east of England, who produce their music alongside a long list of live collaborators. They produce a range of jazz-tinged styles that have their focus firmly places on the dancefloor and the aforementioned debut release has received plays and plaudits from such luminaries as Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music), Keb Darge, Bill Brewster (DJ History / Last Night A DJ Saved My Life), and Smoove (Smoove & Turrell) and lead to a number of live booking including a support slot for Tru Thought’s Belleruche. The new single shows us the funky side to the band with the incredible “You’re Good To Me” first up. Heavy beats, driving bass, funky guitar, frantic percussion and powerful horns combine with Esther Taylor’s sweet vocals to bring a masterpiece in jazzy funk that is impossible to sit still to. The flip shows a mellower side to the band mixing Esther’s vocals with a groovy latin-flavoured backing to create another infectious dancefloor-bound track.

To compliment the limited-edition 7″ vinyl Hero Records will be releasing a digital single loaded with extras. As well as featuring the original Weekend Sun tracks as the vinyl version it will also contain four remixes of the a-side track from Renegades of Jazz and Hero No.7 for those who like to try something a little bit different. Renegades of Jazz turn in their best remix to date using Esther’s vocals over a completely new jazz-tinged funk backing that grooves in all the right places. Hero Records’ bosses throw in 3 different mixes, their 90s influenced Distant Hero Remix that takes Esther’s vocal and places it over a sparse, haunting piano groove and their a b-boy reworks that strip Weekend Sun’s original to its bare bones, adding new breaks along the way and placing the emphasis firmly on the funk. This mix is also the basis for an even more stripped down instrumental bonus beats version that is perfect for djs and dancers to get creative with.

Weekend Sun have a number of live dates lined up this year to help promote the band including their first festival booking at the Just So Festival in Cheshire, England. As well as gigging and promoting their new single Weekend Sun are currently writing and recording their debut album.
