      The crickets are dope man

    2. raytrace on April 08, 2009 19:35

@The Observer: haha they do sound like crickets I suppose - its actually a very slowed down sample of the BassStation

love the strings and the beat.

    2. raytrace on April 08, 2009 17:28

@Sleepdisorder: thank you - the strings are from KORG M1 - softer paddy ones are Xiosynth I think, filtered with MOOG white noise...

    3. raytrace on April 08, 2009 17:29

@Sleepdisorder: all the drum machine sounds (apart from kicks (although the 707 kick is in there a bit)) are from my TR-707 :)

    2. raytrace on April 08, 2009 17:10

      @stephen roche: :) - yeh I used JB_Red_phatt_pro a lot on the kicks - in total there are 5 different kick-types in this I think lol - 707, 808, 909, mBase01 and an Absynth kick

    3. raytrace on April 08, 2009 17:25

@stephen roche: thank you d3ld0t :) - glad you like it - yeh Ste I found my head actually moving back and forth a bit when I was finishing it last nightitiyesterday - and believe me I've heard that bit probably a 1,000,000 times at this stage, so if it was still making my head move I suppose thats a good sign :p - I think the bit just before it 'drops' sounds like an elephant or something eheh

    1. Spuddley on April 17, 2009 03:01

Would love to know how you achieved this sound.

    2. raytrace on April 17, 2009 22:11

@Spuddley: if you're talking about the main acid wobbly bit thats a patch I made in Absynth then played around with while pitch-bending a lot, left Wavosaur recording while I did this, then brought it into Ableton and chopped it around a lot - theres a lot of compression on it too I think - if you're talking about the hi-hats - they're my TR-707 filtered through a MiniMOOG D - theres also a fair bit of autopan on them I think - and I think the phasey effect off the UAD CS-1 strip - that can be heard on the backwardsy clap bit too - :)

    3. Spuddley on April 17, 2009 22:18

@raytrace: Hmmm... I may have the tools to give it a shot. I do everything in ableton though. I do have Absynth... but am not good at programming it yet.

    1. stephen roche on April 08, 2009 12:42

i think you should do a remix and make that kickdrum bassline the main element.it would destroy.

    2. raytrace on April 08, 2009 17:17

@stephen roche: yeh I do like that mBase01 kick-based bassline - but I think it uses a lot of frequencies and would be difficult to put as a main part of a song - when I try to scoop it with EQ to try and 'seperate' it, it seems to lose a lot of its character too - maybe I should try again though - I was thinking of making a version which was just purely the Absynth-y wobbly bit and heavy beats - I might do that but also have some of this bassline in it for a bit - :)

nice breakdown mate very classic sounding

    2. raytrace on November 27, 2009 10:47

@zander: thanks man :) - the strings are done using the wonderful SQ8L vst which is an emulation of the Ensoniq SQ80 which John Carpenter used a lot apparently - its a great sounding plugin IMO, however for some reason it cant be automated, although I think you can using MIDI mapping or something. The 'clean' bassline is Novation BassStation VST.

@raytrace: That acidy riff is so nice...

    3. raytrace on October 08, 2009 22:01

@zuur: :) - yeh I was in two minds (as im pretty sick of songs being put in groups they make no sense in) about putting this in the Acid group, but there is definitely enough acid running through this stuff to be included IMO - yeh that riff is so squishy - its lovely :D

    4. PipWilliams on November 27, 2009 11:51

@raytrace: YES! I love this track...

    2. raytrace on October 07, 2009 20:26

@Paco - Condition: yeh it really is almost acidic - but not quite still sounds pretty 'normal' hardcore-y, you can always hear acidic type stuff at some stage in Hypnotist songs though :D

    3. raytrace on October 07, 2009 20:27

I often thing of big acid drops like this as sounding like thunder or rain smashing down from the sky, I think in this track it REALLY does sound like that (to me anyway :p )

wicked, claps on kicks, reminds me of an old robert armani track, cant remember the name now..... nice work as always Raytrace!

    2. raytrace on August 13, 2009 15:33

@Dj Paco aka Condition: the claps are Goldbaby 909 - I think theres UAD Phase on them aswell. Yeh I think I know the Armani track you'r talking about, it's on Blow That Shit OUt or the Circus Bells 12" I think..

Your mixes seem to have alot of this analog/warm sound to it. Nice man

    2. raytrace on August 19, 2009 00:43

@GenericMeds: thx - in this one I did do some really agrgressive HCF cut on the final WAV, I really wanted to make the hi noises (in particular the whistles and the T99 stabs not too be too abrasive), i also used jb_timemachine vst on AKAI S01 setting on all the breakbeats, and UAD plugins in general seem to add roundness to sounds to me

      Altrn8 sample?

    2. raytrace on August 14, 2009 22:26

@Eoin Bishop: no sorry, I actually sampled it from T99 - Anasthasia, not 'Frequency' (though Im pretty sure they are the EXACT same sound, although Frequency has a bit more effects on it). I think the T99 stab is definitely one of the earliest appearances of that noise. I think its an opera stab, distorted to fuck (and obviously low bitrate), chopped hard at start and end... (not sure though tbh). Songs like MNO - God Of Abraham would kinda support that hypotheses also I think.

  20. 2 comments at 3.20
    1. Condition on August 13, 2009 08:33

perfect, what did you use to get that stab?

    2. raytrace on August 13, 2009 15:37

@Dj Paco aka Condition: its a sample of Anasthasia - I didnt actually do that much to it, as it takes in so many frequencies that you cant really chop out too much, - I used Flux Bittersweet set to 'Bitter' to make it attack more.

    2. raytrace on August 13, 2009 23:34

@zander: thank you very much - I spent a long time trying to decide how loud I would let it be. Its two layers, the sub is Kontakt with 2 sub bass's and one bass from a KORG Mini 700 I think, the top is Massive put through a Leslie and UAD Phaser

    4. raytrace on August 14, 2009 22:29

@The Observer: hmm its chopped at 40hz - theres an exciter thingie on it though which I think maybe kinda saturating it a little too much and making it sound boomier than it actually is - Ill have a listen on my hi-fi speakers when I get a chance...

    2. raytrace on August 14, 2009 22:31

@The Observer: thx :) - a lot of the filtering was done in Dr. Rex player where the envelopes cutoff was actually being automated, hence the kinda 'plastic' noise you can hear off the snares as it goes up and down.

@stephen roche: yeh I think this song would need some serious lasers, dry-ice and strobes :D - moonflowers lol - the other mix is amazing too - the one with the kinda classical synth bits that sounds like a soundtrack to 'The Terminator' or something...

    4. Alkalino on June 30, 2009 00:27

@raytrace: oh man the memories with this one...but i prefer the original one !

    5. raytrace on June 30, 2009 00:48

@Alkalino: yeh I love the normal version too, but I was kinda trying to keep a slightly darker/bassier hypnotic feel and I though the piano/strings bit in that version wouldnt sound as good with the rest of the songs

    5. rayspark-industries on October 16, 2009 12:39

@phresch: i remember this when turning to the b-side and discovering it for the first time better than the a side!

    6. raytrace on October 16, 2009 17:45

@rayspark-industries: yeh it definitely is, while I do have nostalgia for Fairy Dust, I always preferred this the roundness of the bass and cool rolling breakbeat and claps over the massive round kicks just got me instantly when I put it on and the really strobelighty feel of the acid squelches - great stuff :D

    7. raytrace on October 16, 2009 17:46

@phresch: yeh it is deffo one of my faves of all time

    2. raytrace on October 16, 2009 17:48

@rayspark-industries: yeh I have 'Rave Alert' on vinyl somewhere (although as usual it might have been swapped for something back then :s) it is good but a bit too hectic for this mix so I used 'Rave Alarm' instead

great mix i do love the belgian sound reminds me of the very first bits of this crazy music that i heard thank you when's part 2?:)

    2. raytrace on June 29, 2009 16:00

@zander: glad you like it man - yeh so many of the early dance music that I was into come from New Beat (pretty much all the second half of this mix), XL Recordings: The Second Chapter just sounded so amazing when I first heard it back then on cassette :D. Yeh i did have a lot of fun making this and I probably will make a more straight early 4/4 ish hardcore and R&S type stuff mix soon.

    3. zander on June 29, 2009 16:10

@raytrace: great stuff! Enjoying your other productions as well i was thinking more r&s when i was listening to this great period of music imo mate :)

    4. raytrace on June 29, 2009 16:14

@zander: cool man :) - yeh tbh I could listen to the entire Energy Flash, Ravesignal and Dominator 12"s for the rest of my life haha - oh and RHC Fever Callled Love of course :D

    2. stephen roche on June 26, 2009 23:23

@raytrace: reminds me of obsession in the mansion house or was it the RDS?

    3. raytrace on June 27, 2009 18:20

@stephen roche: I'd say it was the Mansion House one - I remember they played 'My Sound' there - amazing :) - then there was that hoax bombscare lol

apologies for this being a bit low, those T99 stabs always make stuff sound like it's distorting
