As far as I know the story of this song - Berry Gordy's son asked many artists to sing the backing vocals which were recorded on different tracks and in the end Rockwell deletetd all tracks except for Michael's. MJ probably didn't reject the use of his voice because Berry was like a father to him - but I'm not sure MJ was happy with it.
