‘An inspirational figure to generations’ – The Times
‘Poly Styrene was a pioneer and a rebel. Almost instinctively, she captured the present and the future with a series of sharp, provocative and prophetic songs.’ – Jon Savage,
The Independent
Celebrating Poly Styrene’s mixed racial Somali background and her conscious lyrics on world affairs, Future Noise Music launched a remix competition for No Rockefeller, one of the outstanding tracks from her last album Generation Indigo and a classic example of how the late singer could masterfully weave incisive social comment over the most insidious of musical backdrops.
The winning Wass n Burls remix, chosen by the album’s producer Youth, will be released as part of a digital only single, in aid of the Somali refugee appeal with all proceeds being donated to UNHCR – The UN Refugee Agency to help directly with their Somali campaign.
More than 1.4 million people are internally displaced in Somalia and over 600,000 Somalis live as refugees in neighbouring countries. After Afghanistan and Iraq, Somalia is the third largest refugee-producing country in the world.
