About
Plaza de Funk has been producing and DJing since 2001.After a few formative years spent dabbling with production and releasing records on labels such as Oxyd in his native country Italy, he moved to London in early 2004 and almost immediately got signed to West Records (best breakthrough label at Breakspoll 2005, and nominated as best label at Breakspoll 2006). The deal lead to the release of the Got The Funk Ep in 2005, which included a remix from Madox and was a massive hit, with support from all major players across the board. The remix also received a nomination for best remix at Breakspoll 2006, and was included in the Beatz and Bobz compilation mixed by Jds. The single was followed by the Back Home Ep on Mantra Breaks, again one of the most prominent breakbeat labels in the world, voted best label at Breakspoll 2007. After these two releases Plaza started working on a string of remixes all through 2006 and 2007, re-tweaking Dj Killer on Functional, Flore on IbreaksFunk, The Drum Monkeys on Westway, MI Loki on Tricksta, and doing a split remix Ep with the Groove Diggerz for Ape records. His remix of The Drum Monkeys’ Batty Batucada made even Fatboy Slim take notice, so much that he called Westway personally to get his hands on a copy of the vinyl! While his remix of Dj Killer’s Acid – released on Functional – has recently been included by General Midi on the latest instalment of the much respected Y4K series on Distinctive. Even with all this remix activity, Plaza has still found time to come up with some original tunes, releasing Get On Down on West records in early 2007. Press support has been high, with the new West single and the Flore remix being given the 5-star treatment in I-dj mag, the Got The Funk and Back Home Ep’s both voted sureplayers in Dj Mag, and the Drum Monkeys remix being chosen as dancefloor destroyer in the aforementioned Dj Mag. Djing has also picked up hugely between 2006 and 2007, and has seen Plaza performing at Breakspoll at Fabric in February, playing two of the Uk’s biggest festivals – namely Glastonbury and Glade – while also jetting around to play in the States, France, Italy, Spain and some of the most respected clubnights in the Uk. There have been a lot more releases between the second half of 2007 and the beginning of 2008, namely the remix of Zimbardo "Say Hey" on Ruff Dog, the remix of Break The Box "Groovy Moves" on Ground Level, the remix of the Beat Assassins "Generation MTV" on Mofo and a new original, "Ghetto Groove/Beatdown" on Brighton Breaks. In February 2008, Plaza De Funk was invited to play Breakspoll for the second time in a row and was nominated in two categories - best breakthrough dj and best breakthrough producer. He won the award for Best Breakthrough Dj and is currently busy gigging throughout the world.
Highlights of 2009 so far include another performance at Breakspoll, 2 tours in the States and the first tour of Australia. Add to this the fact that Do It - a tune that was originally written for a charity complitation project - has just been selected by the Plump Dj's for inclusion in their massive new Global Underground mix cd, and you'll see why the future looks bright!
