This is a remix I completed for Studio 360 ( http://www.studio360.org ) that hosted a Nettle (DJ /rupture's band project) remix contest for their song "L'Avion" with vocals by Hassan Wargui (Imanaren) from south Morocco.

For this remix, I loved basically everything in the song, it was truly beautiful...so, picking which parts to drop out was quite difficult. As with most of the remixes I create, I like to drop out a lot of the original song and peel it back to its more basic elements. What I decided to do with L'Avion was to give precedence to Wargui's vocals and then re-build a song around them. I added a lot of orchestration and began playing with a basic 80's sounding synth (hence the name "Neon") -- for whatever reason, it was sounding right for the moment. I dropped in some of my own vocals as well to accent the flow of the piece. In the end, however, I couldn't resist pulling in some of the other original instrumentation, so I completed some sonic surgery and warping, and peppered them back in throughout the piece -- most notably the end where the violin takes a central role.

I really enjoyed the creation process of this song. For me, breaking down songs into their original elements allows me to feel as if I'm playing with the the artists that played those parts -- ebbing and flowing with the riffs, melodies, and lines they throw at me. L'Avion very much yielded this feeling. How cool would it have been to be in the room creating with these guys? Through this remix, I got to feel as though I was there...just a little bit. Maybe someday...
