Synopsis:
1) A slow introduction (theme V) with fragments of themes A, B, and U leads to the Exposition with martial theme A and more relaxed theme B. After a development and recapitulation, the final coda finds theme V again lurking in the background.
2) In Fm, this slower songlike movement (theme C). Theme A returns in an episode leading to the development. In the final coda, themes U and V are again found, fragmented.
3) A fast, dance-like tempo with a skipping feel. The middle episode utilises themes B, C, and U, at breakneck pace.
4) A rondo in three sections which begins with the sombre first clear statement of theme U. This theme returns in various variations, eventually with a modal shift to C major. First however, there is a lyrical middle section (theme V) which gradually returns to the mood of the first movement introduction. In the final coda, theme A from the first movement reasserts itself.
