Chicago’s Fei Tang a.k.a. "phives" seems to have gotten his hands dirty in every aspect of the music industry. One part DJ, one part blog writer, one part Porn & Chicken purveyor and one part club GM at notorious Evil Olive, it would be fair to say Tang’s voice is helping to call the shots on Chicago nightlife.
Describing himself as ‘the kid who never sat first chair but was able to play every instrument’, Tang was interested in music from an early age. It wasn’t until being introduced to raves though that his appreciation for dance music and DJing solidified. He went on to become a bar GM and DJ in college, eventually leveraging his position within the industry to throw his own events and then began his own music blog to ‘provide a hub for friends to hear and learn about great music that had been abandoned by the public.’ In 2008 he discovered his current home, Evil Olive in Chicago’s Wicker Park and used the venue to usher in a new wave of talent as well as foster his own DJing.
Tang’s involvement at Evil Olive not only meant bringing in a new crop of talented, world-renowned artists, but creating the new home for the nation’s wildest dance party, Porn & Chicken. As part owner in the party’s parent company, SRTB (So Ready To Bang), Tang has helped the event grow and expand to cities like Denver, Madison and Las Vegas while also having a hand in starting other nights under the STRB umbrella. The night has since been crowned Chicago’s best event and boasts numbers upward of 800 people every Monday in what is literally the nightlife version of a three ring circus.
Now with the prestigious title of official Porn & Chicken DJ, Tang plays every Monday under the moniker of Phives to a packed house at the city’s most revered party destination. Describing his sound as a hybrid of Umek, Steve Angello and Kaskade with a bit of Feed Me and Porter Robinson sprinkled in, the music selection is matched only by his energy when DJing. Treating it as a true performance by interacting with the audience at every opportunity, his sets are infectious at every level. From behind the scenes to in the spotlight, watch for this DJ’s continued rise in 2013.
