Due to the additional encoding modifications on soundcloud's player, this version is slightly different from the original version of LD-50. If you are interested, you can download the definitive version here:

LD-50 is an album-length track encoded at 16kbps at a sample rate of 8 kHz in stereo, which brings the full nearly 60 minute composition to under 7MB. This was done intentionally to use the MP3's perceptual encoding as a compositional aspect of the track.

Normally, the Nyquist frequency of an audio stream is half of the sampling rate, so you would expect to hear frequencies no higher than 4 kHz. However, due to various artifacts introduced by the mp3 process, frequencies much higher than 4 kHz are audible. Another artifact of the low bitrate effect is the “smearing” of percussive sounds, which is greatly enhanced in the very low bitrate of LD-50.

Throughout the track you can hear codec artifacts which are not in the original WAV file that sound at various times like whistles, flutes, arpeggiated synths, sci-fi "blinkenlights" sounds, and even (according to some listeners) what seems to be a distant crowd of voices.

Strictly speaking, LD-50 is partly source sound, and partly emergent music that brings codec artifacts to the fore. As such, LD-50 was not complete until it was encoded as an MP3.
