I thought I'd take a harsh noise approach to this week's Disquiet Junto. Seeing as the power of nature is so unpredictable, unforgiving and overwhelming.
I chopped up a few of the sounds on an MPC and looped them. Pretty much using the entire tracks from Michael Raphael. I used a Digitech Distortion and recorded two separate tracks onto a 4 track cassette. One bass heavy, the other maxed out treble.
I used a sample taken from the album by Red Box - I chose this band as my parents listened to it constantly in the 80s. Bringing back the memories of the hurricane that hit SE England in October 1987 when I was a kid. I purposefully put the sample low in the mix to emphasise the fact that nature can over power our human voices!!
The source audio from the 2012 storm Sandy was documented by Michael Raphael, an SFX recordist who maintains the field recording blog Fieldsepulchra at http://sepulchra.com/blog. His sound effects can be found at Rabbit Ears Audio, http://rabbitearsaudio.com.
