My grandfather died recently. He lived the most incredible life and I would've loved to record his story down in written or audio form; however, I waited to long. He played the erhu beautifully and though he joking suggested it once or twice, we never got to play a duet. I've sampled a field recording of an erhu taken by swuing and a recording of an aboriginal leaving song (though not from the same tribe as he was associated with) in writing this piece. Drawing from those samples and elements of the western requiem tradition, I have tried to write an ambient requiem, play a 'second-hand' duet, and offer an apology to my ah-gong for not listening to him when I had a chance.
