About
THE REAL HIP HOP IS OVER HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a born, bred and residing Cape Townian, he has been plying his trade in the music industry since 2000 when he meet fellow emcees Japan Black & Heinemann at a Bush Radio workshop and together formed Hip Hop crew Stems. He started writing rhymes in 1998 and soon adopted the name Illuminate in accordance to his rhymes “bringing light to the darkness.” Between 1999 and 2001 he frequently phoned into The Head Warmers Show on Bush Radio to drop his thoughts and with Stems he performed at many open mic nights. After Stems informally disbanded in early 2001, he started rhyming with longtime rap partner Jean-Pierre. Beginning of 2003 he met some valuable people and together they started the fusion band Supadan in March of that year. He enjoyed some success in the band where he was one of two emcees, recording engineer and co-manager. Success ranged from having two songs enjoy high rotation on Good Hope FM, of which “Talk a walk with me” reached no.1 on the top 40 charts in November 2004 and being the 12th biggest song for that year and the next. There was also success in performing in front of +/- 8000 people at the Moral Regeneration Festival at Green Market Square in December 2004. He also helped Supadan release the single “Take a walk with me” at the Independent Armchair Theatre in October 2005. In 2006 he collaborated with Swiss artists on 3 songs for a Cape Town/Switzerland exchange compilation entitled Rogue State of Mind Vol.1 and then for another 2 songs for the Volume 2 in 2009. He has been part of Rogue State Alliance since it’s inception and currently still is. After leaving Supadan in March 2006, he dropped the name Illuminate and settled for Perspektif as his new pseudonym. He is currently working on a debut album and accompanying that with 2 mixtapes (The Views and Insights mixtape series), one released on 18 May 2009 and the other due out around the time the album drops, around February 2011 on Get It Out Entertainment, which he owns. The 1st mixtape spawned the now classic track, “High Up Like This” which helped imprint his rhyme style and flavour in the minds of the music loving public. He also featured on one and produced two tracks for Jean-Pierre's album "A Universal Message". Perspektif’s sound is very maturely fused in Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul and Funk and he’s versatility has allowed him to venture outside of the norm, testament to him featuring on a House track produced by Erefaan Pearce. He, along with fellow producer Costa Fortune, formally known as Delay, has started a music production company called Just Write Productions. An achievement that Perspektif holds close to his heart is winning the Cape Town leg of Lentswe Poetry Project 2008 and finishing 2nd on the national stage. More recently, in November 2009 he embarked on a trip to London, UK, along with 4 other creatives through an opportunity presented by The Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) of The Western Cape and his work was well received by the London audience, whether rhyming or doing Spokenword. Whether Perspektif or Illuminate, this MC still encompasses the same passion for the microphone and more importantly the whole spectrum of the hip hop culture now as he had when he 1st scripted rhymes, tagged graffiti or 6 stepped.
