Smoglodytes draws its name from China Mieville's "Un-Lon-Don," a young adult fantasy novel about an underground, mirror version of London. Un-Lon-Don is where all anachronistic technologies and ideas go to die. As environmental regulation causes the air in "our" version of London to grow cleaner, it causes Un-Lon-Don's air to become more polluted, ultimately leading to the creation of an intelligent, evil super smog. The Smoglodytes are pathetic henchmen surviving off the smog's awful fumes. The protagonist in the book, a young girl, battles the Smoglodytes throughout, with each conflict leading to bigger crescendos, sort of like what happens here. She is ultimately victorious, but at great cost.
I made the track entirely in Ableton Live. A trio of dark, distorted basslines do the driving work, while an oscillated, somewhat wobbly bass, mysterious keys and detuned highs add just the right level of fear and confusion for one doing battle with an evil cloud. The progression is a little formulaic but I feel like it has a lot of momentum and more movement than my other tracks. I greatly appreciate the feedback, as always. Thanks for listening!
