Need a gift for a gifted musician?
Paul D McDowell is a transcendent, timeless tunesmith, reflecting musically on the gift of now as an eternal fleeting present with acoustic and vocal instruments.
Liverpool born, Paul D McDowell was handpicked by Sir Paul McCartney in Liverpool in 2005, discovered by Gordon Raphael (the Strokes, Regina Spektor), while living and playing in Berlin in 2009, and mentored by David Cross of King Crimson in London in 2011. Paul has been writing songs ever since he can remember.
Paul released a demo album 'I am trying to be happy for you' in 2004, followed an EP 'Overcome', which received radio play and rave reviews from the BBC and local press. In 2005, he formed his first band the 'Peppermint Pigs' with some friends, and intermittently toured solo and with the band around the UK and Europe, but they split in 2007, due to personal differences. Paul soon released another solo EP and was invited to join local band 'Day With Mary' as guitarist and vocalist for the next year, recording a couple of songs with them too. He went on to form the two-piece band 'Ortolans' with drummer Mike Perry in 2008, after a chance meeting around 4am in Liverpool City Centre, later releasing an album in 2009. After a few years of touring around the UK and Europe both solo and with his bands, honing his skills and gaining plentiful insights and experience into the music industry, Paul finally released his own debut album 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' in 2012; which includes songs recorded and released by Gordon Raphael's Shoplifter Records in 2009 and songs recorded by Steve Powell (John Power) in 2005, the rest recorded and produced by Paul himself.
On this album, Paul explores shamanic ritual and transcendent spiritual healing with a focus on relieving suffering and attaining balance through improvisation, chance, personal life experience and self expression. Conjuring up a symbiotic seance with acoustic and vocal instruments, he also express satyagraha and protests against injustices to humanity through kaleidoscopic electronic and audio recordings.
He continued to tour solo around the UK and Europe, and his music has had radio airplay from Seattle to Berlin to Liverpool, and he has shared stages with the likes of Bilgepump, Fionn Regan, Bird Names, the Zutons, the Wombats, CatsandCatsandCats, Metro Manila Aide, Anna-Lena Bludau, the Canoeman, the Michelles, Sarah Maguire and Gordon Raphael and many others.
Currently recording his second solo album 'Time Fantasy, Dream Reality' in Perth, WA, Paul is looking forward to releasing it soon and performing around Australia when he is ready.
In his live show, Paul enjoys transforming normal everyday moments into grandiose anarchic artistic landscapes of shimmering iridescence and suspense, from outwardly extreme bursts of noise to his ambient nature and gnosis in silent pellucidity. Something for all the family!
Paul performs live with his guitar, mic, array of pedals and loopers, harmonica, feet percussion, and voice (and sometimes mandolin and harp).
