Various Artists - Noughts And Crosses Vol. 2

Patrick Bateman aka Kenneth Broxgaard has readied his next label compilation, Noughts And Crosses Volume 2, due for release in late August 2012. The Dane’s Tic Tac Toe imprint has been a go to outlet for fans of a certain type of stripped back house and techno for years now, and this new compilation showcases why.

Alongside plenty of label stalwarts like the boss himself, Miro Pajic and more, there are some key new additions to the family. Those include Psytox, whose ‘Liar Liar’ track is dense with gurgling drum patters and filled with plenty of dark and involving FX. A George Bush monologue adds to the paranoia as mysterious little keys add to the intrigue.

Re:Axis is another new name, with his ‘You & I’ Feat Diana track delving into moody house territory. It’s up-tempo house, though, with tortured vocals hidden between edge of your set synths and hip-swinging claps. Birdcage and Matt Keyl also make label debuts, with solemn, deep as you like minimal techno and beautifully lazy dub house respectfully.

Of course, the usual family are just as on point with their contributions: the boss goes for prickly abstract atmospheres on his floor ready techno cut ‘Club Don’, whilst Mathias Schaffhaüser pairs funky, deep down synth patterns with a tight, shuffling house beat that cannot fail to make you get your head down and dance.

Noughts And Crosses is another exemplary compilation of club music from one of the day’s finest labels. Never afraid of moving forward and toying with templates, the arrival of some new names alongside the established Tic Tac Toe greats make this another essential collection for fans of moody and broody, dark and dubby electronic music.
