The path of music business history is littered with promising careers that have been mishandled and misdirected and Marc Carroll has experienced first hand the frustration that comes with folding labels, collapsing deals, misguided marketing gambits, wrongheaded artist development.
And yet, refusing to be moulded according to marketeers whims and with plaudits straight from the mouths of giants like Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson, each album Marc has recorded over the last 10 or so years – ‘Ten Of Swords’, ‘World On A Wire’, ‘All Wrongs Reversed’ and ‘Dust Of Rumour’ - stand as a tribute to Marc’s single-minded determination and talent, each rightfully accorded across the board critical acclaim.
Now with a brand new album in the works for One Little Indian, and his back catalogue being readied for re-issue, a career retrospective ‘In Silence’ is released on the 25th July through One Little Indian. For those souls unfamiliar with Marc Carroll, ‘In Silence’ also provides the ideal entry point.
The influence of folk, punk, country and blues to the charged harmony pop that inspired him - The Beach Boys to Husker Du, Hank Williams to Neil Young - flow through Carroll’s music, and although the commercial breakthrough that would assuredly endear his music to a wider audience has thus far proved elusive, Carroll’s devotion to his music has never faltered and with a new home comes a renewed sense of purpose. “Derek at One Little Indian asked me what I wanted to do, just straight up ‘what do you want to do’, that’s not something you hear everyday from record labels” acknowledges Marc.
A free spirit with a knack for finding a striking song writer's perspective to deal with life's wounds, challenges and elations make Marc Carroll more than the sum of his parts – from the tender pop ‘n’ folk fired vignettes of ‘Ten Of Swords’, to the raw exposed emotion of ‘World On A Wire’ onto the shimmering transcendence and lustful longing of ‘Dust Of Rumour’ - Marc has synthesised his own indivisible style.
