Recording of a theatrical performance, 1991.
From the show "Eurydice, based on the Greek myth. Orpheus, having lost his love to death, determines to journey to the underworld to face Hades, to plead that he restore Eurydice to the living world.
Hades is so moved by the love of Orpheus and his impassioned playing of the lyre he carries, that he makes a bargain - that Eurydice will follow Orpheus on his return journey to the surface world, but that Orpheus must never look back, or Eurydice will be lost forever. Orpheus complies and looks only forward on his journey, despite not knowing if Eurydice is truly behind him. Finally he reaches the surface of the world and stands in the sunshine. He turns at last to face Eurydice , only to see her stricken face still within the mouth of the cave. Realising his mistake, he can only watch as she is drawn back into the underworld forever.
