On a recent trip to the old DDR Radio building Funkhaus Nalepastrasse, music reporter Anouscha Pearlman visited a “Saal,” a room with high ceilings and ornate gold panels. It had the feel of a cathedral, though it’s actually a recording room. Hörspiel, or radio plays, and ensembles were recorded here during the Cold War, a tradition which continues today under management of Jean Boris Szmczak, the owner of Studio P4.
