@musicdreamz: Frank Ocean was signed to Def Jam, but the record comany showed no interest in him. So, Frank Ocean released the "mixtape" (not album), for free from his blog about a year ago. The tape caught fire all on it's own through the internet. Then, Def Jam decided they wanted to make that "mixtape" an actual album. He didn't know it would become a story because he didn't know his music would catch on and that his record company would actually become interested in him.
Sure wish I could get those seven minutes back...
@dwo123: How is he not profiting when he obviously knew this would become a story, then get his name and CD out? It's on his CD, isn't it?
@Whimsay: Totally agree 100%. Complete rip-off, and it's horrible! Not only is it a complete rip-off, but who does he think he is to use it like this without any PERMISSION from them, at the very the least!!!! It's a classic, and now he's turned himself into a laughing stock for using it this way - hope they sue!
@JulianAniel is right. This is NOT about taking someone else's work and trying to profit off of it. It's about Frank trying to create a tribute to one of the greatest classic rock songs of all time. His intentions here were to honor the original song, while changing up the lyrical content, making it his own version in the process. It is not to disgrace/ruin/embarrass the legacy of The Eagles. Some people just need to stop with the hate. If you like the song then listen to it, if you don't then no one is forcing you to listen to this song.
I find this interesting. I'd imagine many Eagles fans to be Dylan fans as well. Let's look at a quote from him:
"Come mothers and fathers throughout the land
And don't criticize what you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly aging
Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand, for the times they are a-changing."
First off, Frank Ocean isn't a rapper. He's a singer. This is not stealing. This is a cover with different lyrics. I believe in progression, and that things will become better through time. If Frank found 'Hotel California' to be the exact sound that felt whatever emotion he felt, then I condone him to go with his gut against a sea of people who would be upset by this. That's what at an artist does. There's is no limitation of what art is. If I wanted to, I could take a picture of your picture in a museum, and that would be my art. I don't expect many of you to understand this, but that's fine. We aren't meant to all understand each other.
Damn dude, you got some balls...just take someones shit and have no shame about it! Hope Henley and the boys sue the shit out of you! Fucking hack and thief...
@thebrown1: I don't think you get it. Taking something that isn't yours is stealing, whether you make money from it or not. This song was on his CD and even if he didn't make money from this by selling the song directly, the CD made him some money because of this song. Maybe I don't get it and he just does shit for free and if that's the case I have plenty of shit he can do for free.
to Way Less Effort and thebrown1: If I take your car, but don't sell it or make any money from taking it, is that stealing? If I take something that is your, but I don't make any money from it, is that stealing? Get a Grip!!!
BTW, I hope the Eagles sue him for every quarter he has.
THIS S#!T SUCKS!! Dude can't sing and I have heard better s#!t come out of a cows A@@
@joestewartfan: you might as well sue the crap out of all the millions of "unoriginal, rip-off" artists on youtube then.
@Jace Headland Nuzback if you think 90% of hip hop are uncreative you're very close-minded. i bet all you know is 10 or so artists from the genre and they were all the ones who got one hit wonders off of poorly made beats. theres much more to the genre then whatever the bullshit you are saying.
sue the crap out of this unoriginal ripoff artist!!!! and dont sully the song with your crap lyrics!!!
@moderngal: I didn't see a "download" link...did I miss something? I can understand you know a thing or two about douche, but apparently not the statistics and the reality of modern relationships.
@wayside: What's he paying for? Reworking a song, posting it to stream WITHOUT a download option and getting nothing monetarily?
@Whimsay: Ummm, you obviously don't know the FIRST thing about Frank Ocean. One of the BEST up and coming SONGWRITERS in the industry...sorry to have to tell you he's already got his credentials ;-)
@Jace Nuzback: I bet you LOVE Elvis too x-D
This is my big problem with 90% of hip hop. None of these so called artists know how to create anything. They just know how to manipulate pre-existing songs. They can't even sing or rap well over the material. This trash is proof they can't even write lyrics worth a crap.
@Whimsay: It would be stealing if Frank Ocean sold the song and made money off of it. But he didn't. And he didn't claim to produce the song either; anyone with any musical knowledge whatsoever would instantly recognize it.
This is a prime example of what is wrong in the Digital Age! Any one can take a classic song and mess with it. This is not an Homage to the Eagles, it is a complete rip-off. I hope the Eagles are able to sue him for everything...possibly even his vocal chords! If he had any real talent he would write his own music instead of stealing others.
i think it's pretty dope. i just don't think people totally get the mixtape culture. it's not for sale, i don't see what the problem is. anyway, i think the controversy is probably good for all parties involved
Wow... this is the worst karaoke night ever...
Absolute Trash! Stealing a great song too. Did he record this in the Shower?!!! I hope the Eagles sue the heck out of him and any recording company who publishes him!
He straight up jacked that song and called it his own rendention. He just put words to the master track. What an onoriginal bastard
You're crazy if you think this is anything other than stealing. Can't stand Henley, but he's right about this.
What a tool. Horrible lyrics and worse performance
