Need a gift for a gifted musician?
Nikki and the Mongoloid are a pair of (actual) sisters from the Midwest who have both loved hip hop from an early age. Introduced to artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, and Outkast by their older sister, and the Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, and Chuck Berry by their parents they learned to appreciate all sounds. Both spent their adolescent and teenage years seeking all types of live music in clubs and bars all over the Cleveland, Columbus, and Pittsburg areas.
At the age of 19 the Mongoloid decided to get out of Ohio and moved to San Diego. Four short years later, at the same age Nikki followed. Since then hip hop has been a driving force in their lives. The girls first worked with a live band, the Brainfood Orchestra to release a rare EP called Stuff n' Things and do live shows with punk rock, reggae and other hip hop artists. The sisters began rocking shows in 2009 using borrowed beats from a few of their favorite producers like MF Doom, Madlib and JDilla which eventually led to producers offering their talents. Soon after Nikki and Mongo linked up with San Diego producer/emcee Defcon5 of the West Indies and the Supa Unknown to release hip hop history: full length album Just Plain Hard featuring appearances by San Diego natives Doug Masters and DJ Adamnt. Nikki and the Mongoloid are currently rocking live shows, recording (Everyone’s Doin’ It: the Mixtape) and trying to spread funky-ass positive hip hop everywhere they go.
They have rocked shows all over the greater San Diego area at spots like the Kava Lounge, The Yard, Dream Street, the Ken Club, Kadan’s, the Stage, the City Height's Free Skool, Riley’s Sports Bar, the Ruby Room, and the ‘Til Two Club . They have traveled as far north as San Francisco where they rocked an art gallery called The Future and have become a regular act at one of L.A.’s longest running Hip Hop weeklies, Urban Underground. Nikki & Mongo were nominated in the category of “Best Hip Hop Group” for the 2011 and 2013 Urban Underground Honors.
