I still consider myself an amateur producer, keeping things simple and minimal while learning. I prefer using natural instruments and synths, particularly piano and guitar (both acoustic and electric played by my producer colleague Matt 'Abbo' Aberdein) until such time as I'm comfortable with sound design, which is proving to be more of a challenge than producing itself. BTW I use Ableton Live 9 and love it.
In a year or two once I'm comfortable with sound design, I will be moving into some darker tech, minimal and neuro styles of drum & bass, as these styles are defined by the quality of synthesis, automation and resampling in addition to the standard production skills. TIP: Don't fool yourself into thinking you can create quality sounds by simply taking a crack at NI's Massive or similar synth; sound design is a science in itself, and synths/VSTs are only the first step in many hours of work.
