I have been writing this song on and off since 1988, finally arriving at this version for the "Getting Ahead" Musical in August 2012. The lyrics had evolved over the years and crept up to 1862 words including the back story and I pared them down to 392!

It has been completely re-written to match the events in the script written by Susan Paddock.

Musically, this latest treatment explores what it might be like to have singers like Billy Idol ("White Wedding" singing "In every tall dark mirror...") and Sting ("I want my MTV" singing "I won't rest til I'm free") and doing a kind of call and response twisted duet. I could hear them singing it to me while I was recording it! The intro also has an excellent Reason Hammond B3 organ in it, inspired by the intro to "With A Little Help From My Friends" By Joe Cocker. That's got to be one of the greatest intros ever!

The Introduction - Credits for the Drums:
Drums by Rod Morgenstein through use of Sonic Reality Drummer Tracks
Drums Produced by Ken Scott through use of Sonic Reality Drummer Tracks

The drums in the intro are from LZ Grooves by Sonic Reality and sold by esoundz and IK Multimedia - I thought they suited the intro pretty well.

Recorded using Reason - It's all played, written and performed by me except that drum part in the first 60 seconds mentioned above.

Samples: I managed to get some samples in here from my Squier Precision Bass in Reason's NN-XT sampler and some samples from my Fibes kits and even my original Premier drum kit - which I part exchanged to get my first Fibes kit back in 1983!

From the first sixty seconds of the intro, can you name the actual Led Zeppelin song that this Sonic Reality LZ Grooves drum backing track was originally based upon?

    “Who is that standing there?
Why don’t you make him leave?
Why don’t you see him standing there?
    Nobody will believe (me…)

    (It’s) Mister Mystery Man
Wasn’t part of my plan at all_____
    (It’s) Mister Mystery Man
Throws no shadow against the wall….

    “Who is that standing there?
Why don’t you make him leave?
Why don’t you see him there?
He stares intently through accusin’ eyes
I cannot look away – He says he’ll make me pay!”

I’ve done some bad things in my time
But does this punish-ment…fit my crime?
In this moment I can see
    a mysterious man who’s (he’s) hounding me!

    I…… won’t rest til I’m free…
Free from this demon no one can see! Except me!
    I must struggle for control
[Or the mystery man - will do what he can
    - he’s here to take my soul!]

    I got my suspicions…
    But who is he? It’s a myst-ery!
    He looks like my father…
    But it can’t be, He’s hist-ory!

    [He knows everything I know
He’s gotta hold of me and he won’t let go!]

    In every long dark shadow
I can see his face - there’s no hiding place
I’m breaking out in a deep (cold) cold sweat
Such a big fright in the daylight!

    (He says..)
“You won’t rest til I’m free
You speak of a demon but it’s not me! Oh No!
You’re my obsession, you’re my goal
    You’re paying the price
    For your treachery and vice
    You’ve sacrificed your soul!

    1) In every long, dark shadow
    I can see his face
    There’s no hiding place!

    2) In every waking nightmare…
    I can hear his voice
    And I have no choice!

    3) In every tall, bright mirror
    I can see his face
    There’s no hiding place!

    4) Footsteps approaching…
    I can hear his voice
    And I have no choice!

“You won’t rest til I’m free
You speak of a demon but it’s not me! Oh No!
I’ll have my vengeance, you’re my goal
    You’ll be paying the price
    – I’ll have your soul!”

He speaks of my impending death, He says:
“You’ll take me with you… ‘til your dying breath”
    [I’m calling out your name
    You’ll answer to my call!
    My everlasting shame
The greatest shame of all (x2)…]
